What to Wear at Condado Lagoon

What to Wear at Condado Lagoon

You will get wet on Condado Lagoon. The question is how wet, and how to keep the rest of you comfortable while paddling for one to two hours.

This is the clothing and gear checklist for a kayak or SUP day on the lagoon.

Swimwear plus a quick-dry layer

Wear a swimsuit underneath. On top, a quick-dry rash guard or a UPF sun shirt is better than a regular T-shirt because it dries fast and protects from sun.

Long-sleeve UPF shirts are best for sun-sensitive skin and for keeping you cool. Loose cotton T-shirts trap water and get heavy.

Bottoms

Board shorts or quick-dry shorts. Avoid jeans, regular shorts, or anything with a thick waistband.

Leggings work for paddle boarders who prefer them. Skip if you sunburn easily on the thighs without sunscreen.

Footwear

Water shoes are best. Flip-flops fall off the kayak easily. Old sneakers work in a pinch but stay wet for hours after.

Going barefoot is fine for a quick rental but uncomfortable on hot dock boards.

Hat and sunglasses

A baseball cap with a chin strap or a wide-brim hat with a tie. Otherwise the breeze and your paddle will knock it off.

Sunglasses with a floating strap. Polarized lenses help you see fish and sea grass under the water.

Sun protection

Reef-safe sunscreen, SPF 30 minimum, applied twenty minutes before launch. Reapply if you stay out more than ninety minutes.

Hands and feet burn fastest. Don't skip the tops of your hands. A long-sleeve shirt removes most of the upper body problem.

What to carry

A small dry bag with phone, ID, hotel key, twenty dollars cash for tips. Most operators have a dock storage cubby if you prefer to leave it on land.

A water bottle is helpful but not required for a one-hour tour. Bring one for two-hour and longer experiences.

Dress for getting wet and protect against sun. Quick-dry layers, water shoes, hat with a strap, polarized sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen, and a small dry bag. That is the kit. Skip anything heavy or sun-absorbing and you will paddle in comfort.
